Emotional Intelligence Case Study/Use Case example - How to use:

    Client Situation:
The client, Sarah, is a middle-level manager in a multinational company. She has been with the organization for over 10 years and has consistently been performing well and achieving her goals. However, in the last 6 months, she has been struggling to meet her targets and has been having conflicts with her team members. Sarah has always been known for her technical expertise and strong work ethic, but lately, her colleagues have noticed a change in her behavior. She seems anxious, irritable, and is quick to lose her temper. Her performance has also been affected as she is not able to focus on her tasks and often makes mistakes. The company has invested in her by providing her with training and development opportunities, but it is clear that her emotional state is impacting her performance.

    Consulting Methodology:
To address Sarah′s situation, our consulting team conducted an Emotional Intelligence (EI) assessment to better understand her strengths and weaknesses in managing her emotions. The EI assessment we used was the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) which measures emotional intelligence based on the model developed by Peter Salovey and John Mayer. This model defines emotional intelligence as the ability to monitor one′s own and others′ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one′s thinking and actions. (Salovey & Mayer, 1990).

    Deliverables:
The MSCEIT assessment provided us with a detailed report of Sarah′s EI scores on four branches - Perceiving Emotions, Using Emotions, Understanding Emotions, and Managing Emotions. It also highlighted her overall EI score and how it compares to the general population. Based on the results, we provided Sarah with a personalized report that outlined her strengths and areas for improvement in managing her emotions. This was accompanied by a coaching session where we discussed the importance of EI and strategies to improve her emotional competence.

    Implementation Challenges:
One of the major challenges we faced during this consulting engagement was convincing Sarah to take the EI assessment. She was not convinced that her emotions could be the reason behind her performance dip and was reluctant to participate in any emotional intelligence training. Another challenge was gaining the support of her direct manager, who was initially skeptical about the usefulness of emotional intelligence in a corporate setting.

    KPIs:
To measure the effectiveness of our intervention, we set the following KPIs:
    1. An improvement in Sarah′s overall EI score on the MSCEIT assessment by at least 10% within 3 months.
    2. A decrease in the number of conflicts with team members reported by Sarah′s colleagues.
    3. An increase in Sarah′s performance metrics, such as meeting her targets and reducing errors in her work.

    Management Considerations:
It is crucial for the organization to recognize the importance of emotional intelligence and create a culture that values it. This can be done by incorporating emotional intelligence assessments and training in the performance management and development programs. Moreover, managers should be trained in recognizing and managing their emotions and how they impact their team′s performance. This will not only benefit individual employees but also contribute to a more emotionally intelligent workplace.
